The maintenance manager, who has an engineering background, has recently had a large grain storage silo modified which involved welding and weld testing. The contractor who did the testing used radiography (x-ray) and this has got the maintenance manager interested in radiation risks within the organisation.

You have been asked to report to the senior management team on the following:

  • The distinction between ionising and non-ionising radiation
  • Gamma ray, X-ray, optical (ie, ultraviolet (UV), visible, infra-red (IR)) and radio-frequency (ie, microwaves, radio waves) with examples of origins and sources (occupational and natural) relevant to the organisation
  • Electromagnetic (EM) wave properties - wavelength, frequency, energy
  • Particulate radiation properties (alpha, beta, neutrons), with examples of origins and sources (occupational and natural)
