You are concerned about potentially dangerous levels of noise exposure in the vehicle maintenance workshops and while working near heavy vehicles. You are intending to have noise surveys done by an occupational health consultant, but you realise that there are knowledge gaps when it comes to the basic concepts of noise.
Prepare notes for a workshop attended by the operations and maintenance managers, and health and safety representatives from relevant work groups. Include outlines on the following:
- Definition of noise
- Sound pressure and intensity
- The decibel (dB) scale
- The significance of A-weighting ‘dB(A)’ and C weighting ‘dB(C)’, in relation to occupational noise exposure
- The concept of equivalent noise dose (LAeq, LEP,d, weekly and peak).
